Westminster Insights with Catherine Fookes MP: A Fresh Perspective on Politics
Support for Storm Bert Victims
I want to start by expressing my heartfelt sympathy for everyone affected by Storm Bert. The communities of Skenfrith and Osbaston have faced severe challenges. Homes and businesses have suffered due to the harsh weather. The impact has been significant. I am grateful for the hard work of South Wales Fire and Rescue and Monmouthshire County Council. Their dedication to helping those affected has been commendable. They worked tirelessly to support everyone and ensure safety.
Ongoing Flood Protection Advocacy
It is crucial to protect our residents from future flooding. I am committed to advocating for stronger flood protections. Recently, I reached out to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) for updates on the Skenfrith Flood Protection Project. I am looking forward to my upcoming meeting with NRW and members of the Skenfrith community. We will discuss progress and next steps. I am also in regular contact with Monmouthshire County Council. They have provided essential assistance to evacuated residents. I want to reassure everyone that I will continue to support those affected by this unfortunate event.
Engagement with Local Farmers
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of hosting Monmouthshire’s farmers in Westminster. We discussed pressing concerns about upcoming changes to inheritance tax. These discussions are vital. I believe it’s essential for the voices of our farming communities to be heard at high levels of government. I have already shared their feedback with the appropriate bodies. I will keep advocating for the support and recognition that our farmers deserve. Agriculture is a key part of Monmouthshire’s economy. I will work hard to ensure that our farmers get the assistance they need in this challenging environment.
Support for Violence Prevention
I also had the honor of attending the White Ribbon Day Reception. This event included fellow MPs and the Speaker of the House of Commons. This year’s theme, “It Ends With Men,” highlights the essential role of men in ending violence against women. The event was powerful and moving. It featured speeches that emphasized the need for men to stand up against violence when they see it. Allies must work together to change harmful societal norms. I am proud to support this cause and remain dedicated to raising awareness and driving change.
Magor Walkway Station Advocacy
In Parliament, I addressed the issue of Magor Walkway Station again. I spoke directly with the Rail Minister about this important project. I emphasized its benefits, including reducing congestion on the M4. It can also lower emissions and improve local public transport links. Additionally, it could stimulate Monmouthshire’s local economy. I have urged the Secretary of State for Transport to collaborate with Welsh Ministers. Together, they can deliver the promised five Burns stations, including Magor. I have also requested a meeting with him to discuss the progress of these vital projects. These initiatives are not merely about transport; they focus on fostering economic growth while minimizing environmental impact for our communities.
Engagement with Local Schools
On a local note, I visited Archbishop Rowan Williams School and Chepstow Comprehensive for Parliament Week. I was excited to meet students at both schools. I provided insights into how Parliament works and the role of an MP. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were inspiring. The students shared innovative ideas to promote positive change. They discussed local transport improvements and ways to address social inequalities. They also talked about supporting our farming communities. Their thoughts reaffirmed my commitment to ensuring the voices of Monmouthshire are always represented in Westminster.
Commitment to Monmouthshire Communities
As I return home to Monmouthshire, I feel more determined than ever. I am committed to standing up for our communities. Whether it’s protecting residents from flooding, supporting our farmers, or advocating for better transport links, I will work tirelessly. It is my goal to amplify the voices of our young people and represent the diverse and dynamic residents of Monmouthshire in Parliament.
Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support. I consider it a privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament. Your feedback and involvement are invaluable. Together, we can continue to create a brighter future for our communities.
