Revolutionary AI Tech to Enhance Safety: TfL Trials Groundbreaking System After 1 Tragic London Underground Incident

Transport for London (TfL) is indeed turning to the application of new AI technology to enhance safety on station platforms. The system is being tested on the DLR platforms at Custom House station following its trial at Underground level at Willesden Green station.

The tech, in its most basic form, uses security cameras to keep an eye on the platforms, and can spot an object on the track more easily than a train. The idea is to assist with the gap between the train and the platform edge, in order to help keep passengers safe.

This tech comes after a man was tragically killed on the London Underground when four Jubilee line trains ran over him. TfL is now looking at other parts of the network to try and identify other areas to trialling, with a view to expanding in the second half of the year.

Safety is always a priority, according to London Mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, who said “each injury is one too many.” They are also examining incidents and trends on the Tube, seeking to derive lessons from them and make changes. The plan is to use AI to get staff alerted faster when something is amiss, to respond quickly and limit the consequences.
