Stansted Airport security sparks debate over inhalers and liquids rule
A passenger at Stansted Airport has sparked a heated online debate after claiming she was stopped at security for not placing her inhalers in the clear plastic liquids bag. The traveller, who also carried medicine capsules, said she was surprised when security staff insisted inhalers must be treated as liquids, despite her understanding that this was not required.
Stansted Airport’s official website states that inhalers are classified as liquids and must go in transparent bags when carried in hand luggage. However, it also clarifies that essential medicines, including inhalers and dietary liquids over 100ml, can be taken through security if required for the journey, provided they remain in original packaging with prescription details visible.
The incident triggered widespread discussion on Reddit and Facebook, with some asthmatic travellers sharing that they too had been lectured for carrying multiple inhalers, while others said airports worldwide had never raised the issue. Several holidaymakers expressed frustration at inconsistent enforcement across UK airports.
The debate comes as the UK government has delayed the rollout of advanced CT scanners that would have relaxed the strict 100ml liquid rule. Until then, experts advise passengers to carry prescriptions, spare inhalers, and follow liquid restrictions to avoid delays.
